Brunialti, American Costume Jewelry - Art and Industry (2008) Vol 2 p 132, 'Nenette and Rintintin', designed by Alfred Philippe, 1943, explaining these are based on keepsake wool or silk figures given by the French to infantry departing for the front in World War I, reviving the tradition in the next war.
