Description: gold plated base metal, rhinestones. The wings move upward on a sprung mechanism, which moves the spikes on each wing apart, so that they can attach to clothing when the wings spring back down.

Reference: The spike and spring mechanism was patented twice by Ralph DeRosa in Aug 1935, granted Jan 1936 - the first patent diagram is reproduced below (the second patent, 2028593, used the same diagrams, but has slightly amended claims). Brunialti, American Costume Jewelry - Art and Industry (2008) Vol 2 p 160, a small pave DeRosa butterfly, and the patent. Design, construction, and non-use of Sterling date this to 1938-42
