Description: rhodium plated base metal, rhinestones, baguettes
Marked: unsigned
Reference: The characteristic dress clip identifies the manufacturer as Mazer - see MAZ918, MAZ912. The design is copied from the central element of a late 1930s Van Cleef & Arpels (fine jewelry) bracelet. Mazer also copied the bracelet: the unsigned diamante example in Cera, Jewels of Fantasy, pp 172-3, and another ruby bracelet we have seen in a collection, marked with a (characteristic Mazer) unserifed letter 'H', both have (like the original Van Cleef design) 3 rows of 8 table cut stones in the central element - as does this dress clip. The construction of the centre element back of the 'H' marked bracelet is also identical to this dress clip. Click the thumbnail above for illustrations. A distinctly different KTF Trifari copy of the Van Cleef design had 3 rows of 7 stones in the centre, and a different clasp - see TKF1689 (with the Jan 1938 Life Magazine advert). This Mazer dress clip adds further evidence to identify late 1930s costume copies of the Van Cleef design, with 3 x 8 stones in the centre, as by Mazer. Reference Links - maz918 maz912 tkf1689
