Description: gold and rhodium plated base metal, rhinestones, enamelling
Marked: Trifari with Crown, Pat Pend
Reference: Patent is reproduced below (scroll down); designer A Philippe, dated 1940. For 3 weeks in June 1940, the island of Malta in the Mediterranean, a British base, was under attack by the Italian Air Force. It was heroically defended by three Gloster Gladiator Aircraft named Faith, Hope, and Charity. http://www.brooksart.com/Faith.html (Malta remained unoccupied in WW2). Philippe's application for this patent coincides exactly with these events. Brunialti, Tribute to America, pp. 49, 51, offers a colour interpretation.
